Angela James

born 1964

The first woman, and the first Black woman, in the Hockey Hall of Fame

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Canada Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

Four world championship golds, and on 1 November 2010 she became one of the first two women ever inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame — and the first Black woman.

Angela James was born in Toronto on 22 December 1964 and came up through a sport that had long been treated as a white man's game.

She won four world championship gold medals in the 1990s, scoring twenty-two goals and thirty-four points in twenty games across those tournaments. On 1 November 2010 she became one of the first two women inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, alongside the American Cammi Granato — the first Black woman in the Hall, and its first openly gay inductee. She is also in the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame, and was made an Order of Hockey in Canada honouree in 2021.
