Emily Carr

1871 – 1945

Painter of the Pacific Northwest forest

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Canada Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

She painted the coastal forest and the Indigenous communities of the Northwest as nobody had, and was told by Lawren Harris, "You are one of us" — though she never formally joined the Group of Seven.

Emily Carr was a Canadian artist and writer whose work drew on the wilderness and the Indigenous cultures of the Pacific Northwest Coast.

She was influenced by the Group of Seven, and Lawren Harris told her she was one of them, but she was never an official member.
