Co-discovered insulin

Peerless is level 1 of 4 in the Canada Hall of Fame: changed the field itself. Tell the country's story without them and the story breaks. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

He led the Toronto work that isolated insulin, turning diabetes from a death sentence into a manageable condition, and won the Nobel Prize for it in 1923.

Banting was awarded the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with J. J. R. Macleod, "for the discovery of insulin". He shared his prize money with Charles Best, who had done the laboratory work alongside him.

The patent was sold to the University of Toronto for a nominal sum, on the principle that the discovery should not be anyone's private property.
