The Goldberg Variations

Landmark is level 2 of 4 in the Canada Hall of Fame: a first that opened a door, or the pre-eminent figure of their generation in this country. See how the levels work.

Why they are here

His 1955 Goldberg Variations, recorded at twenty-two, changed how Bach is played — and he walked away from the concert stage entirely at thirty-one.

Glenn Gould's first Columbia Masterworks release, Bach's Goldberg Variations, took the music world by storm and established the young Canadian pianist as one of the most brilliant, original and provocative classical performers of his time.

He returned to the same work in the studio in 1981, a year before his death.
