Why they are here
At sixteen she won four medals at a single Summer Games, one of them gold, and she has since become the most decorated Olympian Canada has ever had.
Penelope Oleksiak was sixteen at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and had barely been on the national team. She came home with four medals: bronze in the 4x100 metres freestyle relay, silver in the 100 metres butterfly, bronze in the 4x200 freestyle relay, and gold in the 100 metres freestyle, in which she touched in a dead heat with the American Simone Manuel.
No Canadian had won four medals at a single Summer Games. She was the first Canadian born in the 2000s to win an Olympic medal at all, and she was named the country's athlete of the year.
She added three more at Tokyo in 2021, which took her to seven β more than any other Canadian Olympian in the history of the summer or winter games. A career of that length starting at sixteen has come with injury and with long public difficulty, which she has talked about directly.
