Why they are here
He set out to run across Canada on one leg to raise money for cancer research, made it two-thirds of the way before the disease stopped him, and left behind the largest one-day fundraising event in the world.
Fox began the Marathon of Hope at St John's, Newfoundland, on 12 April 1980, running close to a marathon a day on a prosthetic leg. On 1 September 1980, chest pains forced him to stop outside Thunder Bay; the cancer had reached his lungs.
He died the following June. The annual run named after him is held in dozens of countries.
